(Western powers can help stabilize West Africa)(Editorial) Morrison is the Africa program director for the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. The crisis in Liberia has its roots in a broader regional decline that, over the course of the 1990s, has severely undermined West Africa’s prospects for stability and economic growth. Several already weak countries–among them, Sierra Leone, Guinea and even the relatively prosperous Cote d’Ivoire–have devolved into nasty models of state failure, criminalized governance and human devastation. The question is, what can be done to not just stop but reverse the hideous slide into near anarchy? President George W. Bush is now weighing how or whether the United States will.

Put differently, has Nigeria’s good neighbourly policy brought any goodwill to the government and people of Nigeria? If not, can it lead to Nigerianophile policy in the near or distant future? By Nigerianophile, we simply mean people who admire or are in love or friendly with Nigeria and Nigerians. By Nigerianophile politics, we mean adoption of policies, pronouncements, actions taken in order to enhance Nigerianness, appreciate and promote Nigeria. The military coup d’etat in Sao Tome and Principe as well as the recidivist crises and conflicts in the ECOWAS region provide a good basis for the examination of Nigeria’s role, not simply in the restoration and maintenance of peace and security, but particularly also in the reinstatement of some ousted leaders in ECOWAS countries. As far back as 1963, Nigeria was on record to have openly condemned the ousting.
