Consider the impact of blood diamonds on four African nations: In volatile Liberia, former President Charles Taylor poured some of his estimated $125 million a year in illegal diamond profits into rebel and terrorist activities. Taylor is himself a former rebel who, in the 1990's, ignited a brutal civil war in Liberia that cost 200,000 lives. In Sierra Leone, tens of thousands were killed, raped and mutilated by rebel forces during a civil war from 1991 to 2002. As many as half of the country's 4. 5 million people were forced from their homes. Partly as a consequence of these hostilities, the United Nations lists Sierra Leone as the world's poorest country. Nearly one third of its children die by age five — almost double the rate of neighboring Guinea, and 40 times higher than the U.
