“The difficulty is to recruit trained personnel and be able to afford it. ” In west Africa, the battle against AIDS in Ivory Coast, once a beacon of calm and prosperity, was hit by an armed uprising 14 months ago which sparked a 10-month civil war. In Liberia and Sierra Leone, both hit by civil war, health workers say it is virtually impossible to maintain the infrastructure required to support AIDS prevention.

”That prompted us to search within for the way our company did business,” said Sir Philip in an interview at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, where he announced two new social programs for Nigeria. ”We went back to our values and we asked ourselves: Is there anything missing?” The company decided that it needed to become a better global citizen. Sir Philip, who took over as chairman in July 2001, said his commitment to African development was grounded in a two-year stint as a high school teacher in Sierra Leone, then a newly independent West African nation, when he was a young man. He said he had been struck by the students’ eagerness to learn. ”It was the most intense experience of my life,” he said. ”I still retain a feeling of how Africa could be. ” He returned to Africa in the early 1990’s as the director of Shell’s operations.
