They threatened to arrest members of the newspaper’s management. “We strongly condemn these brutal methods, which are unworthy of a country that claims to respects the rule of law after ten years of war. The security forces should allow the press to work in complete freedom,” said Reporters Without Borders. “The government should quickly call the police to order and take steps to ensure that press freedom in Sierra Leone is guaranteed,” it added.

In order to appraise their complexity and multidimensional nature, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa plans to draw from consultations with the other United Nations political and peacekeeping presences in the subregion, as well as with other partners, the substantive elements that could form part of a strategy to address those issues. Such a strategy would include the maximization of the comparative advantages of all the organizations concerned and the possibility of developing cooperative arrangements between them and the United Nations Office for West Africa. There is such a lot to be done, so much of it out of reach, that he will discover “the art of the possible”. On the up side, there is less fighting in Africa than there was. Angola, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Liberia have ended their wars. But Somalia remains lawless, the Congo a shambles and Sudan unsettled.
