We also believe that the people of Sierra Leone should be left witha legacy of the court’s work that goes beyond the decisions it issues or thenew courthouse it has constructed. It is hoped that the Special Court willcontribute to revitalizing Sierra Leoneans’ belief in the rule of law – that,in the face of future crimes, they will turn to the judicial system forrecourse instead of either seeking revenge or fatalistically accepting whathappened as “the way it is. ” This is necessary to meaningfully combat theculture of impunity that has prevailed in Sierra Leone, to build respect forthe rule of law, and to bring a sense of justice for the horrific crimescommitted. UN peacekeepers are training local forces to take over responsibility for the region’s security. But commanders are expressing fears about withdrawing too quickly. Africa correspondent Sally Sara reports from Sierra Leone. SALLY SARA: There’s nothing glamorous about the diamond fields of Koidu. It’s a muddy, sweaty business. It’s the only work that Foday Fofana has known. He was here when the town was at the centre of Sierra Leone’s civil war…
SALLY SARA: The end of the war has allowed thousands of people to return to Koidu, but the government is still struggling to regain control of the diamond trade. The spoils aren’t being shared around. Peace hasn’t delivered much prosperity in Sierra Leone. This remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Those who survived the horrors of the war are still struggling to rebuild their lives. Despite the enormous mineral wealth here, there’s little on offer for the people. Now, the United Nations is scaling down its presence in Sierra Leone.
