In releasing figures that showed about $44 million (R296 million) of the precious stones had left the state so far this year, the office confidently predicted a “constant rise” in exports over the next several years. “This is the first time in the last 15 years that diamond exports have increased so significantly,” said commissioner Lawrence Myers, adding: “That steady increase is linked to good governance and awareness. Illegal trade in the carbon-based sparklers helped to fuel the 10 years of brutal rebel war that were finally brought to an end in January 2002. Established diamond fields cover roughly one-fifth of Sierra Leone, a country on west Africa’s Atlantic coast where gold, bauxite and rutile are found in abundance.
