Australian detective in Sierra Leone accused of sexual abuse
abc.net.au – Nov 4, 2004
Australia has stepped up diplomatic pressure on officials in the West African country over the trial of Peter Halloran. The charges against him of child sex abuse have attracted criticism from the outset, including claims that the alleged victim was induced to make the accusations and that witnesses have been bullied. Now, as Rachel Carbonell reports, the Australian High Commissioner for Ghana has visited Sierra Leone to discuss the issue with government officials. RACHEL CARBONELL: Peter Halloran is a senior Victorian police officer and former detective with the National Crime Authority.

But a power-sharing deal failed to take hold, and distrust and ethnic, regional and political hatreds continue to run strong. The civil war killed thousands and forced more than 1 million people from their homes. Renewed war would threaten stability in the entire region if it draws in arms and idled fighters from neighboring countries — Liberia and Sierra Leone — themselves recovering from 1990s civil wars. Henry Aussavy, a spokesman for French peacekeepers, repeatedly refused comments on any response by the international troops. Two jets launched the first raid around sunrise, targeting a rebel battalion headquarters within Bouake. An AP reporter in Bouake saw the aircraft fly in low over the town.

Instead of the former Chinese leader and his followers, the poster is peopled by what looks like an updated portrait of Fat Albert and the gang. Guys in track suits and with diamond-studded teeth are drawn in simple lines and feature even simpler expressions. The central figure, a man with an upraised arm, wears the flag of Sierra Leone across his chest — the country that mines all the bling he and his ilk favor. “Bling is the white sun in our hearts” reads the graffiti-like text at bottom. Thing is, this guy and some of his pals are missing fingers — digits likely lost in unsavory circumstances. The assembled manpower, neither fierce nor fearsome, is a gang of inept, self-satisfied poseurs. If these guys are the revolutionaries, I don’t recommend showing up.
SA foreign minister concludes visit to Ghana

The two ministers committed themselves to work together on the economic development of Africa, as set out by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development. They discussed the situation in West Africa, commending the progress made so far by the Economic Community of West Africa under the leadership of Ghanaian President John Kufuor, in bringing peace and security to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau and largely Cote d’Ivoire. They did, however, express concern about the failure of signatories to implement in full the Accra III Agreement in Cote d’Ivoire. Mamoepa said the ministers urged those involved to exercise restraint and “to recommit themselves to the achievement of durable peace and lasting security in Cote d’Ivoire on the basis of the Linas-Marcoussis Accord and the Accra III Agreement”.
