Frisk and his fellow referees were recognized wherever they went in the African country, where they were to officiate a game that symbolized a return to normality after savage civil war. The message of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which organized the trip, was that referees are seen to represent law and order – and for Sierra Leone to recover, that rule of law had to be established. How ironic for me, a privileged observer on that journey, to report now on the recurrence of hooliganism from Britain, my supposedly civilized homeland. How shocking that soccer, the "beautiful game," should be the carrier of death threats to referees who are simply enforcing the rules as they see them.
