Getting there Accessible by rivers and roads, the tourist could reach Lokoja sailing from as far away as Kebbi State or the Niger Delta via Onitsha, if the relevant waterways were dredged. It is also possible to enter Lokoja from countless jetties in different West African settlements on the banks of River Niger. In other words, since the Niger rises from Sierra Leone and flows through Timbuktu in Mali before meeting the Benue at Lokoja, the Kogi State capital is accessible by sea from as far away as Sierra Leone. In the same vein, the tourist can also travel by waterways to Lokoja from Chad or Ibi in Taraba State. By road, Lokoja could be reached from Okene and Kabba, in or via Ajaokuta and Koton Karfin both slightly north of the town. The Kogi capital can also be reached by road from numerous other parts of Nigeria. Travelling by road from Abuja, the fare is between N300 and N600 depending on whether you road in a bus or collective taxi.

Under-5 mortality varies from 316 per 1000 live births in Sierra Leone to 3 per 1000 livebirths in Iceland and 5 per 1000 in Japan. Differences in adult mortality among countries are large and growing. The probability of a man dying between age 15 and 60 years is 83% in Sweden, 821% in Zimbabwe, and 902% in Lesotho. Health inequalities also exist within countries â there is a 20-year gap in life expectancy between Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait Islander people than in other Australians. Michael Marmot (University College London, UK) writes that health status should be a concern to all policy makers, not just those within the health sector.
