Brazil Has 54 Mln People Living in Poverty, Report Shows

9 million, or 32 percentof Brazil's total population, according to the report by theministry's Applied Economics Institute. A study by theministry and national statistics agency using differentmethodology showed 40 million Brazilians living in povertyin 1993. Brazil had with the most unequal income distributionof any country in the world after Sierra Leone in 2003,the institute said, citing a survey of 130 countries. Sluggish economic growth and a pattern of high inflation andcurrency declines have led to increased poverty in Brazil,the report said. “Social problems, given their complex nature, areintertwined and the vicious circles of inflation,unemployment and poverty only make them more difficult toresolve,'' the report said. “The participation of the stateis crucial for this. '' President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who began workingat age seven to help his family make ends meet, was electedin 2002 on promises to create 8 million jobs by and cut thegap between the rich and the poor.

When hunger overcomes fear, they emerge with cheekbones showing on gaunt faces. For sprawling refugee camps in that restive region, food distributions are shelved periodically when travel becomes too dangerous for aid workers. Some feeding programmes for refugees in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone have also been curtailed due to lacking funds. Funding shortfalls are also looming for southern Sudan, while nearly three million are displaced inside in the western Darfur region, where they’ve been driven from their homes by strife. A quarter million other have fled to Chad, where they’ve become refugees. Worldwide, the World Food Programme said last month it urgently needs $315-million to meet the needs of 2. 2 million refugees sheltering in camps, 75 percent of whom are in Africa.

Anne Carey's job as a forest ranger has taken her from the Midwest to San Diego and Sierra Leone, and places in between. Ashley Truett, 20, a student working for the U. Forest Service, described the excitement of working outdoors. "It's so much fun to be out there up to your knees in mud looking for frogs and bugs," Truett said.

On the front pages, the News Letter concentrates on a tribute by Prince Charles to the RUC as he opened a room dedicated to the organisation at a police college in Hampshire. The Irish News opts for a story taken from a new book by Colonel Tim Collins. He tells how a rifle used by a soldier on Bloody Sunday was found in the hands of rebels in Sierra Leone. The colonel says the rifle had been listed as destroyed when the Saville Inquiry had asked for it. Daily Ireland joins the papers in Dublin in concentrating on the findings of the Morris Inquiry into police corruption after officers allegedly tried to frame two men for murder. The Irish Times says the Irish government will consider dismissing the senior officers involved. Daily Ireland comments that the findings are “devastating for the garda”.

Speaking at the closing session of CEN-SAD Presidential summit, the Leader wished that Algeria and Morocco would follow Egypt and ratify the treaty. He expressed his satisfaction of achievements realized during the previous years, adding that important decisions have been taken during this summit. The Leader referred in his speech to the problems that are facing the region including Liberia, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Darfur. He said the problems must be solved within the African continent, warning that any foreign intervention in these problems is like adding fuel to the fire. He called on all CEN SAD member states to help Ivory Coast in solving its problem on the condition that foreign hands stay away. Regarding the border dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia, the Leader asked President Zenawi to draw the borders, so that normal relation back between the two countries. Related News.
