As News Blackout is lifted… Journalists praise Sierra Leone Presiden…
Awareness Times – Aug 26, 2005
the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, has attracted praises from members of the media, for his timely intervention in appointing a Coroner in the person of Magistrate Adrian Fisher, to preside over an inquest into the circumstances leading into the death of the former Acting Editor of For Di People Newspaper, the late Harry H. It could be noted that following the death of Harry on July 28, 2005 at the Cupid Hospital, there were widespread speculations that his death will not be unconnected with the severe beatings he had on May 10, 2005 by people allegedly acting on the instructions of Hon…
Fatmata Hassan, of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP). Amidst these speculations, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), in concert with the Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU), met at an emergency meeting where they agreed to call for an institution of an independent judicial inquest into the death of the former editor, so as to have a clear insight into the actual cause of his death. To capture the attention of the authorities concerned and to send out a clear message that the press does not intend to keep a cool head over the isuue, both SLAJ and SLRU, effected an all out news blackout on the police, the house of parliament and the office of the vice president, accusing them of not doing anything significant to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserved. It was at this juncture that the president, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, intervened by appointing a Coroner to oversee the much needed inquest. His timely intervention and the pace at which the inquest is progressing, has impressed members of the press to an extent that they have decided to temporarily lift the news blackout earlier imposed.

And this court action was greatly publicised by the party over the radio and in newspaper advertisement. DemocracyThat the plaintiff, Chief Normans case should reach the courts and put the SLPP schedule behind is no mean achievement on the part of the indictee.
