Chimps Sought in Attack on US Tourists in Sierra Leone

Embassy warned Americans against traveling to the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, from where the chimps escaped before the Sunday attack on a taxicab filled with Americans and others. The Sierra Leonean driver died as the chimps ripped his body apart and the three Americans were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries, said a top police official, Oliver Somasa.

An intervention force made up of West African troops ousted him the following year. In 2000, Koroma switched sides, winning a measure of popular support by helping the civilian government defeat a new wave of rebel attacks. After the war ended, he won a parliamentary seat in May 2002 elections. Following a shootout with government forces at a military barracks in January 2003, authorities accused him of trying to destabilize the new government and he fled.

But Taylor's forthcoming war crimes trial should not be transferred to The Hague, as Liberia's president and the court itself have requested. Such a transfer would defeat a main purpose behind the establishment of the court in Sierra Leone:to teach Africans, in their own countries, the fundamentals of justice and to drive home the principle that no one is above the law. The special court has the potential to help raise West Africa's standards for accountability, transparency, fairness and the humane treatment of defendants. In countries where might makes right, demonstrating the proper administration of justice can be an unbeatable nation-building tool.
