The Hastings Airfield complex, 24km east of the capital city, was a refuelling stop for British fighter planes during the 1982 Falkland war. It later served as an important base for the West African ECOMOG and the UN peacekeeping forces during Sierra Leone’s 10-year civil war which ended in 2002. “Sierra Leone was chosen because the infrastructure is already there, taking into consideration it had at one time one of the largest UN missions in the world,” ECOWAS executive secretary Mohamed Ibn Chambas told reporters.
