Guinea’s democrats wait for support
International Herald Tribune – Feb 16, 2007
At stake is not just the stability of Guinea, but that of its fragile neighbors, whose recent wars were intertwined with events in Guinea. The last thing needed by Liberia’s new democratic president is instability to her north. Sierra Leone is also struggling to overcome the legacy of its civil war, and ethnic tension has been on the rise ahead of July elections. Washington, London, and Brussels have invested heavily in the reconstruction of both. Their passivity in the face of Guinea’s destabilization is difficult to fathom. What would support for democracy in Guinea look like? The European Union, which resumed aid to Guinea in December, would suspend assistance until Conté agrees to step down. Western democracies would back efforts by the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union to mediate his departure.

(From Nottingham Evening Post) A book by Notts writer Victor Okrafo-Smart charts his family’s remarkable story since one of his ancestors was rescued nearly 200 years ago from a slave ship and resettled in Sierre Leone. DAVID LOWE reports When Victor Okrafo-Smart took early retirement from his career in psychiatric nurse management at the Queen’s Medical Centre, he decided to delve deeper into his family history. As a boy in Sierra Leone, he heard stories of one of his descendants being rescued from a slave ship bound for America. Now after years of diligent research, he tells his family’s fascinating saga in his recently published book Okrafo: Over a century in the lives of a liberated African family, 1816-1930. The book appears at a topical time.
