Only about 5 percent of African slaves were from what is now Mozambique and Madagascar in the southeast, far from the main centers. With this new information in hand, I now know more about my African ancestors than I do about many succeeding generations. The entire period between when my ancestors arrived (whenever that was) and the early 20th century is a mystery. On my father’s side, I know that my paternal great-grandfather was born in Brooklyn in 1910.
