Millwall have yet to win asingle game and last week the first team lost 2-0 to Ebbsfleet from theNorth Kent Doug and Dinsdale Piranha Loan Shark League. There were all sortsof excuses – trying a new formation, loads of substitutes, traditionallynever play well when in an estuarial setting – but that familiar cloud ofgloom is beginning to settle once again. But maybe we’ll beat Sierra Leone this week, in a game arranged to commemoratethe 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. None of my mates is goingto the match – either because they quite approve of slavery and wish westill had it, or they resent the opportunistic politicisation of a simplefootball game and doubtless the hideous PC rigmarole that will accompany theevent. Ribbons, bracelets, solidarity and cant. It does seem a little harsh, both on Millwall’s supporters – who in generalare unaccustomed to saying sorry at the best of times, especially when it’snot their fault – and indeed the Sierra Leonians, who may feel a littlepatronised. Maybe Sierra Leone should go the whole hog and play the game in leg ironswhile being whipped, as a symbolic gesture…
