Don McKinnon, Commonwealth Secretary-General told Ms McAskie that he looked forward to working closely with the UN Peace Building Commission (PBC) towards consolidating political stability and promoting social and economic development in the country. GA_googleFillSlot(”AllAfrica_Story_Inset”); The Commonwealth sent a team of Observers to Sierra Leone for the recent Presidential and Parliamentary elections, including the run-off. The Observer Group's report said the elections had been credible, fair and peaceful. The team also made recommendations, highlighting the problems of youth unemployment, the provision of infrastructure and social services, and corruption and accountability issues.

The arms ban, which came into effect on Thursday, does not include members of the security forces. It also covered machetes and cutlasses, outside of their justified use for farming. The crackdown followed the election of President Ernest Bai Koroma in a September 8 poll seen as a test of stability in the former British colony, five years after the end of a 1991-2002 civil war, one of Africa’s most brutal conflicts. Citizens had two weeks in which to surrender the prohibited weapons after which possession would be deemed “an act of defiance” that would land offenders in court, Assistant Inspector General of Police Chris Charley told reporters.

She was dressed ina traditional West African dress, one of two that were her only original possessions brought from Sierra Leone.
