UNIOSIL stops short of condemning violence in Sierra Leone

Several distinguished Sierra Leoneans had called upon UNIOSIL to outrightly condemn the violence as a means of impressing upon those perpetuating the violence that their actions were frowned upon by the United Nations. It is generally believed in Sierra Leone that the International Community celebrated the downfall of the last Kabbah led SLPP regime which was widely touted as being soft on corruption. The SLPP has consistently denied it was corrupt but it was in the above light that Sierra Leoneans had appealed through this leading Awareness Times newspaper on September 19th 2007 for the Executive Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (ERSG) to publicly denounce the unacceptable levels of violence.

Don McKinnon, Commonwealth Secretary-General told Ms McAskie that he looked forward to working closely with the UN Peace Building Commission (PBC) towards consolidating political stability and promoting social and economic development in the country. The Commonwealth sent a team of Observers to Sierra Leone for the recent Presidential and Parliamentary elections, including the run-off. The Observer Groups report said the elections had been credible, fair and peaceful. The team also made recommendations, highlighting the problems of youth unemployment, the provision of infrastructure and social services, and corruption and accountability issues.

Action Aid International Sierra Leone (AAISL) is putting women in the center of all their interventions. AAISL is working towards building confidence, skills and knowledge of women so that they may decide their own destiny, live without fear of violence and participate effectively in decisions that affect their lives and livelihoods. The Violence Against Women (VAW) project seeks to reduce violence against women in Post Conflict Sierra Leone.
