Sierra Leone progress in World Cup

The Leone Stars claimed victory with a 1-0 aggregate score. The result means Sierra Leone will join Djibouti, Madagascar and 45 other African nations in the hat for the qualifying draw for Africa’s first ever World Cup. That takes place in Durban on 25 November 2007. Djibouti qualified for the main draw by beating Somalia 1-0 in their preliminary qualifier on Friday.

Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana qualified for the biennial tournament by virtue of finishing in the top three places at the first African Amputees Nations Cup in Freetown earlier in the year. Nigeria were also due to participate in the Turkey tournament, but have pulled out due to lack of finances. Sierra Leone were on the verge of pulling out for the same reason, but a local United Nations office came through to provide funding for the week-long trip. Sierra Leone are the most experienced side among the African countries at the tournament. They were the only African country to take part in the maiden edition of Amputee Football World Cup in Brazil in 2005…

Eleven Canadian soldiers are also serving with the UK-led International Military Advisory Training Team, which is providing training to the reformed Sierra Leone Army. Canadian soldiers have been part of the Training Team since its establishment in 2000. Sierra Leone is one of the two countries currently on the agenda of the UN Peace Building Commission. Canada strongly supports the Commission and has contributed $20 million to the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
