Sankoh died in prison in 2003 while facing a war crimes indictment. * The death toll from the war is estimated at 50,000 in a country that has a population of around 6 million people. Sierra Leone ranked second from bottom in the 2006 U. Human Development Index. * Former Liberian President Charles Taylor was put on trial in June 2007 in The Hague. He is charged with instigating murder, rape and terrorism in Sierra Leone where, in return for diamonds mined in the east of the country, he is accused of arming Revolutionary United Front rebels.

The devastation visited on untold tens of thousands of individuals and families must end, and adequate measures to aid these victims be instituted immediately. Continued progress toward political stability in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Cote d’ Ivoire. A peace agreement struck between the parties themselves early in 2007 holds the promise of restored political stability in Cote’ d’ Ivoire, and delayed steps toward it have begun, as I write. Liberia and Sierra Leone have also made very promising advances toward peace and economic recovery. May each of these fragile processes gain strength in 2008…

Early reports have suggested, as I wrote in an earlier column, that progress toward these goals has been slower in Africa than it needs to be in order to stay on course to reach these goals by 2015.

3 million in the fiscal year to date, spurred mainly by higher professional fees, interest on convertible debenture and management fees.    Mano explores for gold, diamonds, and iron ore western Africa, with projects spread in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. The company has two separate joint ventures for kimberlite diamond exploration and production in Sierra Leone. The Tongo kimberlite project in eastern Sierra Leone is a joint venture between Mano’s 68. 5 percent owned subsidiary company, Stellar Diamonds Limited and BHP Billiton. Stellar Diamonds also owns 49 percent of the Kono kimberlite dyke diamond project in partnership with Petra Diamonds.
