Cameroon: Cameroon Hit By Social Unrest With Political Implications
AllAfrica.com – Mar 3, 2008
Even before the violence erupted this attempt to change the Constitution in favour of the incumbent has poisoned the political life of the country, during the past months. Some high profile Cameroonian intellectuals, writers, artists and journalists, have also criticised the move. They have been joined by a small group of African peers to petition against the planned constitutional change with a clear warning: "scenarios such as those in Kenya, Sierra Leone and Cote d’Ivoire and Chad", are so easy to generate. They invited the Members of Parliament, where President Biya’s party has the majority, to act "before its tot late". "Our future is precious, please don’t waste it for one man", the signatories of the petition said. They also highlighted that "changing article 6. 2 of the Cameroonian Constitution will only help weaken the country’s institutions which stand as the only barriers against barbarianism".

Cameroon: Act Before It’s Too Late – an Appeal to CPDM Parliamenta…
AllAfrica.com – Mar 3, 2008
For once, show some courage; steer clear of infamy! Our future is priceless; do not gamble with it! Most importantly, do not play with fire! Amending Article 6 of the Constitution of the Republic of Cameroon would weaken the institutions that protect Cameroonian citizens against acts of barbaric abuse. For too long, we have lived as if we do not see the mishaps that have befallen our neighbours. Suffice it to say that recent incidents in Ivory Coast, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Somalia, not forgetting Chad testify to the fact that a single foul play with the Constitution could plunge the entire nation into insurmountable chaos. The civil strife that these countries have experienced lends ample credibility to our conviction that Cameroon’s social stability is fragile, very fragile indeed. Cameroonians are peace-lovers; do not compromise it! Otherwise, you shall be judged in front of the tribunal of History.
