Sierra Leone: Kargbo Out of Olympic Challenge

Sierra Leone’s only female athlete in the ongoing Olympic Games in Beijing Saturday failed to qualify for the next round of the women’s 100meters. Michaela Kargbo, who was the youngest in heat 10, competed against eight other athletes from Jamaica, Norway, Virgin Island, Haiti, Russia, Malta, Montenegro and Nepal. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah has last Friday August 15th 2008 called on Sierra Leone journalists to practice good journalism in order to build for themselves a profession which all citizens will respect. Kabbah was speaking at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown during his Opening Remarks at the First Annual Oguoguo Memorial Lecture organized by Concord Times Newspaper. Whilst drawing attention to the practice of demonising and assassinating the character of well-meaning individuals by some sections of the media, Pa Kabbah called for journalists to research their stories and to confront their subjects with their findings before publication.

The investigation modalities will be worked out as soon as the two nominees of SLAJ report to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Professional Standards. The Sierra Leone Police wishes it to be known that it is committed to providing a safe and secured environment for the citizenry of this country and any attempt to unduly tarnish its hard worn image will not be entertained.
