Sierra Leone Cracks Down On Illegal Fishing

The "Pak Won" was ordered to pay a fine of 105 million leones ($35,000) fine for illegally fishing in the Inshore Exclusive Zone of Sierra Leone, the Fisheries Ministry said. More than a dozen fines for fishing violations have been leveled against foreign vessels, mainly South Korean and Chinese, amounting to millions of dollars, according to a navy official. "We have stepped up our surveillance particularly since poaching is on the increase around the Christmas and New Year periods for the lucrative shrimp, tuna and salmon markets in Europe," he said. Sierra Leone’s President Ernest Koroma said at a maritime event in Freetown last week that the country is losing $29 million to illegal fishing each year.

‘Fambul Tok’ Launches Reconciliation Tournament in Sierra Leone

In her opening address, IPAM’s Acting Dean of Campus, Mrs. Oludokpo Gbonda explained that the training is aimed at engaging procurement staff and selected project implementing agencies in a comprehensive and intensive training exercise on procurement. “The training will cover all aspects of public procurement, including works, goods and equipment procurement management and consulting services,” she noted, while encouraging participants to take the training with all seriousness it deserves.
