Sierra Leone: MPs Salary Increase – To Pay or Not to Pay

It was noted that by September of 2007 Kenya’s 222 MPs were already earning more than US$10000 a month in salaries and expenses much of which is tax-free in a country where most people live on less than US $1 a day. A BBC report stated that “ordinary Kenyans view their MPs “as lazy and self-interested who often skip parliamentary sessions unless it concerns a pay rise for themselves. GA_googleFillSlot(“AllAfrica_Story_RightE”);So is the storyline for Sierra Leone MPs a repeat of the Kenyan debacle or is this a genuine cry for help at such a time when the economy is not only tanked but on a donor-cliff hanger eclipsed with some 90% of its population living in abject poverty? Why now is the question many critical minds have being wrangling about? Why shouldn’t the MPs wait tomorrow or the day after when the economy by some miracles booms to mandate for such benefit? Could it be that these Honourable men and women know something the average folks do not know? If so why are they not telling us for all to be on the same page? The search for these answers has cast a gloom on the MPs motives which are now being highly scrutinized with some quarters calling it ‘black’ and mere arrogance. To these pundits our Honourable men and women are simply being selfish seeking their own interest rather than working for the general good of the electorates who voted them in office. Our law makers are not only asking for four thousand dollars (US$ 4000 or Le 12 million) per month but are also requesting a soft loan of USD$ 45000 as car loan. They are asking for a 30 percent (%) payment of the cost over a three year period. These MPs want 70 percent (%) of the car loans absorbed by the budget paid for by the tax payers.
