Sierra Leone has been recovering from a civil war that started in 1991. Tens of thousands of people died and two million were displaced. Driedger was overwhelmed to hear the stories which included multitudes of child soldiers. “They only have a 35 per cent literacy rate so we really wanted to help” she said. A school for about 100 primary students will cost $10500 including supplies.

"It was a real experience to see children who have suffered so much get involved in the game" said Tony. "I hope we did a bit of good and gave them something to remember.

That’s when they switched course and released Anthony and Eugenia Akapo from a Broward detention center and sent them home to Tampa. In doing so ICE reversed its view that the Akapos had overstayed their visas didn’t deserve asylum and should be deported to their native Sierra Leone. Akapo was savagely beaten for opposing rebels who terrorized the populace to gain control of Sierra Leone’s diamond mines in a 1990s war. When rebels set fire to their house the Akapos fled to Gambia. Yet they received death threats even after the fighting subsided.

But in the town of Makeni despite the many challenges there are also inspiring success stories. Mohamed is a high-school dropout who drives a motorcycle taxi known as an okada to get by.
