Leone to probe student's death in initiation rite12 hours agoFREETWN (AFP) — Sierra Leone’s President Ernest Koroma on Friday ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the death of a university student following a beach initiation ceremony. The president said that “those involved in the satanic murder” of the student should be charged in court. Mohamed Juana a first-year 23-year-old student of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Sierra Leone died on December 24 during a voodoo-type initiation rite that would have made him a member of a secret student society. More than half of all students at Sierra Leone’s university are believed to be members of such societies which are shrouded in secrecy and often have complicated initiation rituals. In his radio and television address Koroma also announced “a ban on cultism in all institutions of learning” saying “it is against the laws of God and the laws of the land”.

Samuel Hinga NormanChief Hinga Norman was born in Nguala village Valunia Chiefdom Bo District in the Southern Region of Sierra Leone on 1st January 1940. He graduated from the Mons Royal Military College at Aldershot in the United Kingdom and served as an officer in the Republic of Sierra Leone Military Forces until his retirement in 1972. He was later appointed Regent Chief of Jaiama-Bongor Chiefdom Deputy Minister of Defense and later as Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Sierra Leone. He was also the National Co-coordinator of the Sierra Leone Civil Defence Forces. Chief Norman died in Dakar Senegal on 22 February 2007 from complications of hip replacement surgery.
