“It will cost 220000 dollars (167000 euros) and run for approximately 10 months” Balla Amarasekaran head of the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary said. Amarasekaran explained that the chimp count would help answer key questions about the population and the habitat of the great apes in Sierra Leone and could even set the stage for reintroductions. “It is estimated that no more than 2000 chimpanzees currently reside in Sierra Leone’s forests but that number was culled from an informal survey carried out in 1981″ he told AFP. Amarasekaran whose sanctuary on the outskirts of Freetown is the largest in Sierra Leone said the impact of the country’s ruinous civil war and the rapid destruction of forest cover had led some experts to fear that chimpanzees could cease to exist in the wild within 50 years.

Sierra Leone: Life is Sad
AllAfrica.com Washington
Life is sad and riotous in the country. People should be sympathetic. In the whole world Sierra Leone is the least developed- least life expectancy highest infant mortality rate in the world the poorest country where we live below a dollar a day leading to low standard of living poorest health conditions in the world low standard of education and the highest unemployment rate in the world. President Koroma has the chances to make his mark positively if he is determined to salvage the nation and its people from degradation. The mining companies will create jobs and get thousands of youths out of the streets if only politicians would stop being selfish. It was the same negative politics that was about to bring Koidu Holdings on her knees. President Koroma should impress on Koidu Holding that they are the live wire of the nation.
