Sierra Leone joins regional coastal zone management

The director of the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone Daniel Dauda Siafa told APA Thursday that the regional coastal zone management initiative aims at tackling poaching and piracy that are endemic in the region. “There have been a lot of criminal activities on our waters and we intend to drastically reduce this through a pilot project titled ‘sustainable zone management’ Siafa said. In Sierra Leone the project will target five localities including Yawri Bay Sierra Leone river estuary Turtle island and the Scarcies river estuary. Recently the Chinese and American government’s provided the Sierra Leone navy and police with patrol boats to help combat piracy and poaching activities along the country’s coastal line.

Sierra Leone Prisons Ends Counselling Training for Staff

The training programme which started from Monday 19th to Thursday 29th January 2009 was conducted for 30 health personnel selected from prisons around the country in order to support the establishment of prisoner rehabilitation programmes within all prisons. Selected personnel were trained in various methodologies including counselling techniques identification of signs and symptoms of psychiatric disorder; and problem solving and relapse-prevention strategies. Through the training prison staff were equipped to assist in counselling prisoners to address mental health drugs alcohol anger or violence. This would reduce recidivism which is the incidence of prisoners being released re-offending and returning to prison.

He commended Plan Sierra Leone for the strategy and encouraged other communities to emulate the ‘good example of Robareh’. Country director Plan Sierra Leone Fadimata Alainchar said Plan is a child-centred community development organization working assiduously in pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals. She told the community that Plan works with the vision of a ‘world in which all children realize their full potential in societies which respect people’s rights and dignity’. Madam Fadimata referred to health as a right issue and congratulated the Robareh community for making the environment healthy for children noting that a community that is healthy is wealthy. The country director expressed gratitude to UKN DfID for the support to the country office to facilitate such a ‘laudable process’.

The youths alleged that many residents in the area have been faced with harassment and intimidation from armed Military Police (MP) personnel attached to Shekito each time they attempt to pass through the route they have been using all this while. According to them they have severally complained the issue to elders in the area who have tried in vein to resolve the issue. Sheka Tarawallie they allege always referred to residents as Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) supporters and as such are not entitled to any convenience. It was revealed that Thomas Drive named after Mayor Tom Nyuma houses hundreds of residents that are presently being inconvenienced by Shekito. Time For reparations The Sierra Leone Court Monitoring Programme (SLCMP) urges the Government of Sierra Leone to offer a public apology before launching the long awaited victims’ reparations programme. n 30 January 2009 the Government of Sierra Leone through the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) the implementing agency for the reparations programme will launch the Reparations Programme for victims of the 11 years civil conflict. Guided by the Lom?eace Agreement of 1999 and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Act 2000 the TRC recommended the creation of a programme to address and respond to the specific needs of victims. Although it is coming seven years after the war ended the SLCMP nonetheless welcomes the decision and congratulates the Government and NaCSA. The conflict in Sierra Leone was characterised by serious violations of human rights at almost all levels.
