Verdict in Sierra Leone’s RUF trial next week

The leaders of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) Issa Sesay Morris Kallon and Augustine Gbao face 18 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity including murder rape sexual enslavement cruel treatment using child soldiers and attacks on UN soldiers. They have all pleaded not guilty before the UN backed Special Court for Sierra Leone. Prosecutors say RUF fighters committed numerous atrocities during Sierra Leone’s bloody 1991-2001 civil war. By the time the conflict ended some 12000 people were killed and tens of thousands of others had been mutilated their arms legs noses or ears chopped off.

Now some of these people may receive money as well as education and health benefits to compensate for their loss. In the northern town of Makeni the government was interviewing those who say they are victims to decide who should receive reparations.

He made this assurance yesterday following a plea from the Information Attache at the Sierra Leone High Commission Sorie Sudan Sesay at his 41 Eagle Street Holborn office. “We have naturally talented musicians in Sierra Leone but because you people are not showcasing them in your television very little is known about them. I want to use this meeting tomake this passonate appeal to you” Sudan said. Sudan said some of his Sierra Leonean musicians have natural talent and can perform better than these Europeans. ALmani observed that his network is not deliberately refusing to play Sierra Leoneans songs but that they have no access to them and the few they have access to cannot play quality songs.

Chinese consul general urges Russia to probe sea accident

20 (Xinhua) — A senior Chinese diplomat urged Russia on Friday to conduct a serious probe into an accident at sea in which seven Chinese sailors went missing. Three of their compatriots were rescued alive. The Chinese cargo ship “New Star” bearing a Sierra Leone flag sank off the waters near Russia’s far-eastern port of Vladivostok on Sunday. The Chinese Consul General in Khabarovsk Sun Lijie traveled to Russia’s far-eastern port of Nakhodka to discuss the incident with local authorities. He urged the Russian side to treat the rescued Chinese sailors properly and make all efforts to search for the missing crew members. He also asked that the Chinese side be informed as soon as possible about the cause of the accident after a serious probe is carried out. China attaches importance to the incident and the Foreign Ministry as well as the Chinese embassy and consulates in Russia are discussing the issue with the Russian side he noted.

Munu has confirmed the detention of one Victor Sheka for reportedly passing on intelligence to the police that have been found to be bogus and misleading. Victor Sheka believed to be a former 1st Lieutenant of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) is said to have approached the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) personnel manning the Mano River Union (MRU) border post on the Sierra Leonean side with an intelligence that certain miscreants in neighbouring Liberia were busy purchasing arms and ammunition from disarmed combatants in Ivory Coast for the purpose of further destabilizing war torn Sierra Leone. Because of the weight of the intelligence the personnel at the border post deemed it fit to escort Mr. Victor Sheka to the police headquarters in Freetown where after due interrogation and examination of the validity of the intelligence he was placed under formal arrest. Speaking in a press interview AIG Francis Munu disclosed that the former military officer was arrested because the intelligence report he passed on to them was found to be bogus and geared only at getting money from the force. According to AIG Munu the SLP in partnership with other intelligence units in the country carefully examined the intelligence and the individual behind it noting that after due assessment both the intelligence and the conveyer were found to be incredible.
