It also calls for suspension of further negotiations of mining agreements until the task force’s review has been completed and published. It is not clear when the review of mining policies will be completed but the coalition says sufficient time should be allowed and a specific channel be set up for soliciting contributions from civil society and residents of mining communities. The key minerals mined in Sierra Leone are diamond gold rutile or titanium oxide and bauxite. The agreements signed with transnational mining companies have often proved unfavourable to the government and people with the state often accused by activists of colluding with the mining companies. According to Mboka the main rutile mining company in the south Sierra Rutile bagged an exclusive deal with the government in 2003 that grants the company a tax holiday till 2014. This exemption from a range of tax obligations according to the activist was only discovered via a leaked memo. fficials of the Mineral Resources ministry have declined to comment on the issue.

However when this reporter did a follow-up visit to the hospitals last night it was confirmed that all the students admitted on Thursday had been discharged from hospital. This reporter witnessed as the last admitted student Fatmata Turay was collected by her parents last evening. Fatmata and another student Umaru Best were the most badly affected and had been under intensive care until they regained consciousness. Staff Nurse David Kamara who is the Nurse in charge at the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) informed that the two pupils were first discharged from the ICU and referred to wards four (4) and two (2) after getting a little better.

1 –> Sunday March 01 2009 AFC To Support Infrastructural Development In Sierra Leone INDICATINS emerged during the week that the government of Sierra Leone and the African Finance Corporation (AFC) may have initiated efforts to boost infrastructural development in the diamond-rich West African country. Andrew Alli may be visiting Sierra Leone before the end of this month to honour President Ernest Bai Koroma’s invitation. “The purpose of the visit is to support infrastructure development in Sierra Leone” said a source at the AFC. The Guardian also learnt that Alli has accepted the invitation and would be leading an AFC delegation to Sierra Leone in a couple of weeks.
