Issues Bemoaning the Demise f Sierra Leone External News Agency
Standard Times Press
As a recorder of current history the news agency in a democratic society like ours offers all topical information without comment and distortion as it serves establishments and individuals holding contradictory beliefs social as well as political. In Africa the idea of establishing national news agencies originated from the forming of the organization of African union whose leaders were with the fervent belief that a pan African news agency would correct the biases imbalance and distortion prevalent in the western media by giving greater depth and more relevant perspective to African news and information. In his presidential address to parliament in 1973 the late Dr. Siaka Stevens urged third world countries like Sierra Leone to be less dependent on western multi national news agencies for the collection and dissemination of news about our countries. He observed that the distorted image of third world countries in the outside world is caused by the distortion and misrepresentation of news by western news agencies stressing that the only remedy to this problem was the setting up of a Sierra Leone news agency to correct the imbalance by informing the world about our many and varied humble achievements and developments. Having gone through some teething problems the Sierra Leone News Agency under the acronym SLENA started operating in 1987 with equipment and technical support from UNESC while the Sierra Leone government provided the office building and personnel and other local logistics. It is disheartening though that while other news agencies in the world are fighting to be on the cutting edge of journalism’s new frontier the Sierra Leone News Agency is left moribund as a result of utter neglect by the relevant authorities.
