Britain pledges 28 mln pounds in aid to Sierra Leone

Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Ivan Lewis on Friday wrapped up a three-day visit to Sierra Leone which is struggling to recover from a brutal decade-long civil war which ended in 2001. He told Sierra Leone radio that Britain would give grants of 16 million pounds (24 million dollars 17. 5 million euros) to boost reproductive and child healthcare 10 million pounds in budgetary support for the government and two million pounds to support the country’s Anti-Corruption Commission. Britain will also host a donor’s conference for the West African country in London later this year.

Leone political parties sign deal to end violence1 day agoFREETWN (AFP) — Sierra Leone’s rival political parties — which were involved in bloody clashes last month — on Thursday signed an agreement brokered by the international community to end the violence. In March violence flared up between supporters of President Ernest Koroma’s All People’s Congress (APC) and the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). Tensions came to a head with an attack on the SLPP party headquarters on March 16 which left some 20 people wounded. Six women also reported they had been raped during the clashes. The agreement dubbed a peace deal by diplomats urged “an end to political fracas among all political parties in the country” adding that “nobody is above the law. “”The police will be impartial and undertake their job correctly against anyone regardless of political affiliation” it added.
