Nigeria is still tainted with corruption and bad governance whilst Kenya is still convalescing from a damaging tribal political strife that almost brought the safari nation to ruin. As a Sierra Leonean I need not waste a lot of time clamouring on the regional impact of bama’s visit because as I write the majority of journalists in Sierra Leone are today at odds with the current government on how to get rid of a law that is a menace not only to their profession but more importantly to the whole nation and concept of democracy that we all crave for. GA_googleFillSlot( “AllAfrica_Story_InsetB” );Whilst I will agree that the problem of sedition and defamatory libel is not something that could be solved overnight in Sierra Leone one thing that is clear is that since that infamous criminal and defamatory libel section was trusted into the Public rder Act of 1965 by late Albert Margai all the succeeding administrations have skilfully ignored or refused to confront the real issues of finding a replacement to the draconian press act that was enacted to silent opposition voice. I am trying to differentiate two things here because the Public rder Act of 1965 contains other important instruments for the protection of public order and safety and those elements are just more than important to be maintained but the segments of Part V containing defamatory and sedition libel are the most controversial that have been opposed to from the outset. There are myriad of reasons out there not to repeal libel laws but I strongly believe that we are running out of time in Sierra Leone. At a time when the incumbent government has made the fight against corruption its uppermost priority it’s all the more imperative that the repeal of criminal libel be an important issue for all of us. The current government will leave a lasting legacy if it does swallow the bitter pill and recognize that time is running out.

SLCMP strongly urged the government of Sierra Leone to uphold its commitment to the rule of law by undertaking its obligations under the Rome Statute. “As the government continues to work hard in rebuilding public confidence in its legal system as well as providing justice for all Sierra Leoneans it must set an example for its own citizens and the world in general by acting in accordance wit international law which requires Mr. al-Bashir’s extradition” said Mohamed Suma programme director for SLCMP. According to the statement if African nations shun their obligation under the Rome Statute the truth may never come to light and justice for the Sudanese people and for Africans generally may never be realized. GA_googleFillSlot( “AllAfrica_Story_InsetB” );”Protecting the dignity of the African people requires that the truth be told” the release stated.
