Taylor testifying in his own defense told the court that during the war in Liberia many Liberians traveled to Sierra Leone as refugees. GA_googleFillSlot( “AllAfrica_Story_InsetA” );These Liberians Taylor said later became members of the rebel group United Liberation Movement for Democracy in Liberia (ULIM) and were armed by the Sierra Leone army to attack Taylor’s forces in Liberia. According to Taylor’s evidence many of these armed Liberians later stayed in Sierra Leone and became known as the Special Task Force (STF).

The president of the Court told the U. SecurityCouncil Thursday that if additional money is not found immediately thecourt would experience shortfalls by the first week of August thatcould disrupt its work. The Special Court is the firstinternational tribunal to be fully funded by voluntary contributions.

The Sartell mother of four is helping build a home for 86 orphans in Sierra Leone and raising funds for a Haitian orphanage as well. 7 event called Hands of Hope will support both causes. FamilySierra Leone has had a special place in Schmidt’s heart since 2004. That’s when she and her husband Paul Schmidt adopted two children Emily and John from a Freetown orphanage.
